Sedation Dentistry for Children
We understand that visiting the dentist can be an overwhelming experience for some children. Whether due to young age, severe dental anxiety, special healthcare needs, or the necessity for extensive dental work, Tiny Sparkles Pediatric Dentistry offers a range of safe, effective sedation options. Our goal is to ensure that your child receives the highest quality dental care in a completely relaxed, fear-free environment, building positive associations with dental visits that will last a lifetime.
Laughing Gas (Nitrous Oxide)
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a very safe, mild sedative that helps children relax while remaining fully awake and responsive. It is inhaled through a small, scented mask placed over the nose. The effects work quickly to reduce anxiety and suppress the gag reflex, and they wear off almost immediately once the mask is removed, allowing your child to return to their normal activities right away.
IV Sedation
For children with severe dental phobias, special needs, or those requiring complex, full-mouth restorations, we offer IV (Intravenous) Sedation. This allows your child to sleep peacefully and safely through their entire procedure. We partner directly with a highly trained, board-certified dental anesthesiologist who monitors your child continuously from start to finish, ensuring the absolute highest level of safety and clinical excellence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. When administered by trained pediatric dental professionals and board-certified anesthesiologists, sedation dentistry is incredibly safe. We follow strict, rigorous safety protocols and continuously monitor your child's vital signs throughout the entire procedure.
The effects of nitrous oxide are very brief. Once the dental procedure is finished and the gas is turned off, your child will breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes, completely flushing the sedative from their system before they even leave the chair.
Prior to IV sedation, we will provide you with detailed, specific preoperative instructions. The most important rule is that your child must fast (no food or drink) for a specific number of hours before the appointment to prevent nausea and ensure absolute safety.
