Infant Dental Care & Baby's First Visit

Welcome to the beginning of your child's smile journey! The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child's first dental visit occur by their first birthday, or within six months after their first tooth erupts. At Tiny Sparkles, we specialize in making this initial introduction to dentistry a positive, joyful, and completely fear-free experience. Early visits allow us to establish a 'dental home' for your family, monitor developmental milestones, and provide you with essential guidance on teething, pacifier use, and proper oral hygiene.

What to Expect at the First Visit

Your baby's first visit is all about comfort and education. We perform a 'knee-to-knee' exam, where your child rests comfortably on your lap while Dr. Angie Chin gently examines their gums, jaw, and any erupting teeth. We focus heavily on answering your questions and providing anticipatory guidance regarding diet, thumb-sucking habits, and the best ways to clean tiny teeth.

Frenectomies (Lip & Tongue Ties)

Some infants are born with a restricted frenulum (the tissue connecting the lip to the gums or the tongue to the floor of the mouth). This can cause significant difficulties with breastfeeding, speech development, and later orthodontic alignment. Dr. Angie is highly trained in diagnosing and treating lip and tongue ties using advanced, minimally invasive techniques to ensure optimal function and comfort for your baby.

Frequently Asked Questions

You should schedule your baby's first dental visit by their first birthday, or within 6 months of the eruption of their very first tooth—whichever comes first.

Even before teeth appear, it's important to clean your baby's gums. After feedings, gently wipe their gums with a clean, damp washcloth or a soft silicone finger brush to remove bacteria and milk sugars.

Common signs in infants include difficulty latching during breastfeeding, prolonged or painful feedings for the mother, poor weight gain, and a clicking sound while nursing. If you suspect a tie, schedule an evaluation with us.
