When an emergency strikes, time is often of the essence. We prioritize pediatric dental emergencies to ensure your child receives prompt relief from pain and the best possible clinical outcome. Do not wait—call us immediately if your child is experiencing trauma or severe discomfort.

Common Pediatric Dental Emergencies

Children are prone to accidents, and knowing what constitutes a dental emergency can save a tooth. We frequently treat:

  • Severe Toothaches: Often a sign of advanced decay or infection.
  • Knocked-Out Permanent Teeth: Keep the tooth moist (in milk or saliva) and get to us within 30 minutes!
  • Chipped or Broken Teeth: Can expose the sensitive inner pulp and require immediate capping or bonding.
  • Dental Trauma: Falls or sports injuries that cause loose teeth or bleeding gums.

What to Do Before You Arrive

If your child knocks out a permanent tooth, handle it only by the crown (the top part), not the root. Gently rinse it if it's dirty, but do not scrub. If possible, reinsert it into the socket; otherwise, place it in a cup of milk and head to our office immediately. For toothaches, rinse the mouth with warm water and use a cold compress on the cheek to reduce swelling. Never apply aspirin directly to the gums.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find the tooth, hold it by the crown (never the root), rinse it gently in milk or saline without scrubbing, and try to reinsert it into the socket. If you can't, place it in a cup of milk and bring your child to our office immediately. Time is critical—ideally within 30 minutes.

Yes! A persistent or severe toothache is often a sign of an infection or an abscess. It requires prompt attention to alleviate pain and prevent the infection from spreading.

The best defense against sports-related dental trauma is a custom-fitted mouthguard. We strongly recommend that children wear mouthguards during any contact sports or activities with a high risk of falls.
